"I found this in the Si Wong Desert," Jaya said quietly. "Inside a ruin that isn't on any map. The ruin wasn't Fire Nation. It wasn't Earth Kingdom. It wasn't even Spirit Wilds." She paused. "It was older. Much older. Before the Lion Turtles. Before the first Avatar."

"I'm not looking to be found," Ryu replied.

And in that instant, he understood.

Only Ryu remained standing.

"You have neglected your duty, little Avatar," the dragon whispered. Its voice was the grinding of continents. "You hid in swamps while the wound grew. Now the other half of your soul walks the world without you."

Ryu tried to waterbend. Nothing. Earthbend. Nothing. He was just a boy.

One was a Fire Nation girl about his age, her hair shaved on one side and dyed crimson. She carried a pair of wind-fire fans and had the coiled-spring stance of a pro-bender. "I’m Li Na," she said, not bothering to hide her irritation. "My grandmother used to spar with the Fire Lord. I’m here because the volcano on Crescent Island started weeping black smoke shaped like a face. My face. So yeah. I’m invested." avatar the last airbender 2

The other was an Air Nomad—or rather, the closest thing left. His name was Kavi, and he was a non-bender who had studied the lost airbending forms as dance . He moved like a dandelion seed in a breeze. "I felt it in the wind," he said softly. "The wind is crying. It doesn't cry for the Avatar. It cries for balance . And balance is a circle, not a throne."

They were all he had.

The air moved. Not as a weapon. As a sigh. "I found this in the Si Wong Desert," Jaya said quietly

Ryu, the current Avatar, did not want to be found.

"Like I finally know how to breathe," he said.

"I'm not here to fight you," Ryu said.

"The world doesn't care what you're looking for." She sat down across from him, uninvited. "My name is Jaya. I'm a geomancy student from Omashu. And I saw something in the stones."
