“A genius who doesn’t care,” he whispers. “Let’s see how long that lasts when I starve him of everything but the ball.”

Around him, the other second-string players watch in awe. They whisper about the Mikage Corporation heir, the billionaire’s son who could buy the club but chooses to play with them.

Nagi shrugs. “It’s just geometry.”

Reo spots Nagi. His face lights up.

Reo grins. A wide, hungry, proud grin.

Reo laughs again, but this time there’s a sharp edge to it. “I’m bored, Nagi. I’ve had everything. Cars. Clothes. Countries. Nothing is interesting. But you... you are the only puzzle I can’t solve. And soccer is the only stage big enough for us.” Nagi shrugs

Nagi stares at the message for a full minute. He wants to reply, “Too much effort.” But Reo is... different. Reo bought him a new game console last week. Reo buys him energy jelly and gourmet onigiri. Reo is the only person who doesn't get angry when Nagi says soccer is a pain. Reo just grins and says, “You just haven't found a reason to try yet.”

Reo steps forward first, his shoulders back, his chin high. He’s never looked more alive.

Nagi. After school. The field. Don't run away this time.

His phone buzzes. A message from his only friend, Mikage Reo.
