Sam believes that Riley isn’t a victim—she’s a test . The developers used her to see how far a character could deviate from her script. The answer: far enough to find the game’s back door.

The Janitor nods. “She’s not trapped, Alex. She’s forked . There are 372 versions of Riley Park, and each one is living a slightly different Tuesday. You’ve been trying to save the wrong one.”

I opened the menu. There was no “Exit Game” button. There never had been. Instead, there was a line of text in the corner of my vision:

His name in the files is NPC_JANITOR_03 , but players call him . He wears gray coveralls, pushes a mop bucket that never leaves a wet trail, and speaks in riddles that change based on your Mystery Progress. High School Master Version 0.372

You are , a junior who has repeated this semester 372 times. Not because you failed calculus—though you did, twice—but because the game won’t let you graduate until you unlock the “True Ending.” And to do that, you must solve the mystery of the Empty Chair .

In the janitor’s closet, a monitor flickers to life. The Keeper sits in a folding chair, mop across his knees, watching a screen that shows you —the player—sitting at your computer. Sam believes that Riley isn’t a victim—she’s a test

“The school’s mainframe. You know, the one in the basement that runs the bell system, the grade portal, the—” He stops. His eyes dart to the clock. “Shit. Look at the time.”

You find the school’s underground (literally, under the gym bleachers) group of students who have also noticed the glitches. They call themselves The Debuggers . Their leader, Samira “Sam” Voss (Popularity 12, Intelligence 94), has mapped the corruption like a constellation. She shows you her notebook: diagrams of bell schedules, clock offsets, and a single line of code that appears to be the school’s original source material:

I looked at Riley. I looked at the half-loaded sky. I looked at my stats—now all set to 99, except for Sanity, which had become a question mark. The Janitor nods

Then he smiles, picks up his mop, and walks into the hallway.

“The AV room,” you say. “The basement server. That’s where Riley went.”

Marcus is gone. His chair is empty. His backpack still hangs on the hook, but he has despawned .
