Deconstructing Entertainment and Gendered Morality: A Case Study of the Hindi Film Kuwari Dulhan (Virgin Bride) in Popular Media

This paper analyzes the 1986 Hindi film Kuwari Dulhan (Virgin Bride) as a cultural artifact that reflects and reinforces dominant ideologies of femininity, sexuality, and marriage in 1980s India. While promoted as light-hearted family entertainment, the film’s narrative structure, musical interludes, and character arcs reveal a pedagogical function: disciplining female desire and valorizing pre-marital virginity. By examining the film’s content within the broader ecosystem of popular media (posters, songs, radio promotions), this paper argues that Kuwari Dulhan serves as a conservative counterpoint to the emerging liberalization of Indian cinema, using entertainment to normalize patriarchal surveillance of the female body.
