“Unit MS-903, codename Doraemon,” one intoned. “You have exceeded your temporal permit. Your emotional matrix has developed a ‘Home’ bias. You must return for memory-wipe and reassignment.”

Tamako knocked on the door. “Nobita? Doraemon? Dinner.”

“Making the result permanent.”

One rainy evening, Nobita came home failing not one, but seven subjects. Tamako, Nobita’s mother, screamed until the walls shook. Nobita ran to his room, slammed the door, and buried his face in his futon.

The next morning, Doraemon did something illogical. He used the Small Light to shrink himself and hid inside Nobita’s pencil case. At school, when Gian pounded Nobita’s desk, Doraemon popped out, inflated to full size, and fired a Sleepy Gas Bomb directly into Gian’s open mouth. The bully collapsed snoring. Doraemon’s ears (what remained of them) twitched. A strange error flickered across his vision.

“Doraemon… I’m worthless,” Nobita whispered. “You should go back to the future. Find a better kid.” “Unit MS-903, codename Doraemon,” one intoned

“Then your purpose is fulfilled,” said the robot. “Return.”

He reached out a soft, stubby paw and placed it on Nobita’s trembling back. “Nobita,” he said, his voice glitching. “I cannot go back. Because… the mission is no longer the mission.” You must return for memory-wipe and reassignment
