They were joined by a small group of loyal companions, including Umar ibn Sa'ad, who later played a crucial role in the events leading to Karbala.

As they journeyed, Imam Hussain received letters from the people of Kufa, a city in Iraq, inviting him to come and lead a rebellion against the Umayyad regime.
