When the unseasonal monsoon came, the elders said it was punishment. The younger ones said it was climate. Mada said nothing. He just watched the water rise.
Mada just nodded and kept drawing.
People called him foolish. "The water doesn't care about your drawings," they said.
He lived in a small hillside village where the air always smelled of clove and wet earth. Mada was a cartographer by trade, though no one had ever asked him to map anything beyond the boundary of the next valley. He began to draw not maps of what was, but maps of what was becoming. Each morning he waded through knee-deep water, notebook held above his head, marking where the new shoreline had crept overnight.
