Ray Shoesmith sat on the edge of his bed at 3:47 a.m., the blue glow of a paused crime drama flickering on the television. The episode was called "See You In Your Dreams" — he’d chosen it at random, liking the irony. In his line of work, dreams were a liability. They gave you hope, and hope was a leaky boat.
“You look terrible,” she said.
Ray didn’t deny it. He’d taken Chloe to a diner last week. She’d noticed the bruise on his knuckles, the way he scanned every room for exits. She’d asked if he was a bouncer. He said yes. She laughed and said, “You’ve got sad eyes for a bouncer.”
Bruce raised an eyebrow. “Someone with a pulse?”
