The map was de_dust2 . Ten players connected. Nine of them were the "poors"—the default Phoenix Connexion models with the basic loadout. Then there was Maverick.

His model was slick: sunglasses, a leather vest, a silenced M4A1 with a frost skin that didn't exist in the vanilla game. When he typed /vip , a menu popped up:

The server was called FRAG ZONE | VIP CLASSIC | NO STEAM . To an outsider, it looked like a digital ghost town from 2006. But at 11 PM sharp, it hummed back to life.

The server lagged. The skybox turned pink. Everybody froze except Maverick.

And somewhere in Romania, a dusty Pentium 4 server blinked its green light, dreaming of the next 11 PM.
