He crossed the room and knelt beside her, his voice dropping to a murmur only she could hear. “I didn’t promise that. I promised I’d never erase you .”

At ninety seconds, the lights flickered back on across the city. Sirens began to wail in the distance.

He turned off his phone, dropped it into a sewer grate, and walked with her into the city’s breathing dark.

He looked at her—really looked at her. The woman who had pulled him out of a burning server room in Prague. The woman who still believed he had a soul beneath the architecture of zeros and ones. Rahim soft - Part 60

“No,” Rahim corrected, finally turning. “It’ll shut down their optics, their comms, their weapon links. The grid will flicker. Hospitals have backups. The metro will pause for ninety seconds. And in that ninety seconds, we walk out the north tunnel and disappear.”

Outside, a muffled thud echoed through the concrete walls. The contractors had reached the outer blast door.

“Now,” Rahim said softly, “we see if I kept a copy of the key to the backdoor.” He crossed the room and knelt beside her,

The bulky man melted into the shadows without a word. The other three operatives scattered in different directions, as rehearsed.

“Faster,” Rahim said.

They moved through the dark like smoke. The bulky man took point, guiding them by memory. Rahim counted in his head— thirty seconds, forty, fifty —each beat a small victory. The north tunnel opened into an old maintenance shaft that led to a subway station that had been closed since the ‘23 quake. Sirens began to wail in the distance

“Seven. Maybe eight. They’re not military. Private contractors. High-end.” Mira’s jaw tightened. “They’re using the backdoor you installed last year.”

“The asset is live,” whispered Mira, her fingers dancing across a ruggedized tablet. “They’re inside the primary server farm.”

She stared at him. Then, despite everything, she laughed—a sharp, exhausted, real laugh.

He felt the sting but didn’t show it. That backdoor had been a compromise—a deal with the devil to save three hostages in Jakarta. The devil, as always, had kept a copy of the key.

He almost smiled. “No. I’m Rahim Soft . And Part 60 just began.”
