The tragedy of Rodney St. Cloud is the tragedy of many unsung pragmatists. By the 2000s, the rise of microfinance as a global brand overshadowed his homegrown, race-conscious model. The 2008 financial crisis, caused by the exact predatory lending St. Cloud had fought against for four decades, wiped out many of the small banks and community trusts he had helped build.
