“It’s gone.”
“He happened.” She jabs a thumb at Sheldon without looking. “Billy Sparks told everyone at lunch that my brother has a ‘special spot’ on the floor for his bottom. Do you know what that does to a girl’s reputation in the seventh grade?” “Zero percent
Sheldon stares at her. For once, he doesn’t have a comeback. He just nods once — a tiny, seismic gesture of gratitude.
Sheldon gasps. “You touched it with your unwashed hands ? The oils alone—”
She places the peanut on the table. It’s slightly smudged. And Billy Sparks once ate glue paste for an entire semester
The high school hallway, next day. Sheldon is explaining the peanut to a bored-looking science teacher. Missy watches from a distance, arms crossed. Then she spots the popular girls — Heather, Chloe, and Jenna — giggling near the lockers.
“What happened now, honey?”
Missy walks in. She looks at Sheldon. She looks at Mary’s worried face. Then she reaches into her pocket.
“Don’t ruin it, George.”
“I’m never going back.”
